Typically, larger prawns are referred to as jumbo or king prawns. Medium-sized prawns are also referred to as prawns. Smaller prawns with a higher count are then referred to as shrimp. You can find the latin names of the products on the back of the packaging, such as King Prawns (Litopenaeus vannamei \/ Penaeus monodon). Standard glaze is 10%, but some products have 22%, 30%, or even 40%, artificially inflating weight and reducing value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gross weight vs. Net weight: <\/strong>Gross weight includes the glaze, while net weight is the actual product weight after glaze is removed. Legislation now requires net weights to be displayed on packaging, you\u2019ll usually find it on the back of the pack e.g. Water (as protective ice glaze). Many buyers focus on price per bag without considering actual prawn content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Count \u2013 Understanding Size &amp; Pricing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Count refers to the number of prawns per pound (lb) or per kilo (kg) depending on the way the prawn has been prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Typically, head-on prawns are counted <em>per kilo <\/em>while headless (or cooked &amp; peeled) prawns are counted by <em>the pound<\/em>. The amount of prawns that fit into that pound or kilo is then represented as a range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example the MSC Fairway Cooked and Peeled Coldwater Prawns 150\/250 1.2kg net will contain 150 to 250 prawns per pound (with the total weight of the product, without packaging, being 1.2kg).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Larger count = smaller prawns.
