Or maybe you call it \u2018Picky Bits\u2019? The latest viral food trend calls it \u2018Girl Dinner\u2019, but essentially, it\u2019s all the same: A snack-meal created using up what\u2019s in the fridge: Convenient, cost-effective, and usually much more delicious than you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Girl Dinner\u2019 trend kicked off when LA influencer Olivia Maher posted a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@liviemaher\/video\/7232130214506057003?lang=en\"> simple video<\/a> of a quick meal she\u2019d made up of a few things she found in her fridge (bread, cheese, grapes, wine), with the caption \u2018I call this girl dinner or mediaeval peasant\u2019. It gained 1.5 million views on TikTok.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It soon went from a minimal spread of leftover bits to an elaborate spread with ingredients bought specifically for the occasion. It stays true to the origin of the trend, creating colourful plates of food from fridge-raid ingredients. Sometimes wooden boards are used instead of plates for aesthetics and there\u2019s nothing \u2018left over\u2019 about the curation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspiration: Brie, pickles, cured meats, bread, crackers and chutney, and a pasta bowl <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@layp0p\/video\/7249158622788209925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@layp0p.<\/a> Tomatoes, olives, prosciutto, burrata, plums and ros\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@alanalavv\/video\/7249440560610577706?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@alanalaav.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But not everyone was in favour of a \u2018Girl Dinner\u2019&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Girl Dinner\u2019 soon sparked conversations around nutrition, gender, and body images, spiralling a host of different versions of \u2018Girl Dinner\u2019, as well as articles in the media with headlines such as \u2018How Problematic is Girl Dinner, Really?\u2019, and \u2018Please Don\u2019t Gender My Dinner\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few people even created their own \u2018Girl Dinner\u2019, where beige food and perceived higher calorie meals were shared, including a wine glass filled with macaroni cheese and turkey dinosaurs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@brookiebarry\/video\/7259402548598050090?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7197879143555646982\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">@brookiebarry.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there was also a more cynical backlash with, \u2018Tears for dinner\u2019 and \u2018Depression meal\u2019. The seemingly harmless trend became metaphorical. It was no longer about the food but about the ramifications of its role in society and diet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food for thought<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media has huge power, which can be both good and bad. The only reason the trend had backlash is because it was gender specific.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s fuss-free, made from leftovers, cold foods (basically like your ploughman&#8217;s but with a few extras)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s visual. Turn your \u2018picky bits\u2019 into grazing boards with lots of colourful foods. You could have mini scotch eggs, ham, chutney, cheese, bread and fruit all on the same platter.
